The Illinois High School Association girls state track and field meet will be held this weekend — and Fenwick’s Mary Kate Callahan won’t be taking part. But a lawsuit to be filed Wednesday by Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan in federal court aims to make it possible for student-athletes with disabilities, like Callahan who is paralyzed from the waist down, to compete in future IHSA state meets.

District 86 Board member keeps up court fight

A DuPage County judge will allow Hinsdale Township School District 86 Board member Dianne Barrett to file a third amended complaint in her lawsuit against the School Board while district attorneys will seek a sanction to recoup legal costs. District 86 attorney James Petrungaro said the board will seek sanctions from Barrett and her attorneys for the defense of what he called “a meritless motion.” District 86 board members had previously discussed the possibility of being reimbursed by Barrett for legal costs incurred. It didn’t take long for Nichole Mara to become hooked on fishing. The Hinsdale Central senior has some very early memories of joining her dad when he would grab the tackle box and fishing poles, and head for a lake or pond. “I started going with my dad first,” Mara said. “Ever since I was in diapers, we would go, even ice fishing. I’m an only child, and my mom fishes, too, so it was something we’ve always done together as a family.” The family outing aspect of going fishing definitely made the sport a drawing card for Mara. Lions Park Pool opening soon with new equipment

Users of Lions Park Pool in Clarendon Hills will see the first of some new additions when the pool opens for the season at 11 a.m. May 26. A new diving pool, water-play feature and bubbler splash pad all are part of the projected $1.3 million in improvements planned for the pool by the park district, although some of the additions won’t come until the fall. Dancing for Seniors gets toes tapping

Local celebrities put on their dancing shoes and hit the dance floor at the inaugural Dancing for Seniors: A Blockbuster Gala. More than 250 attendees turned out for the benefit hosted by the DuPage Senior Citizens Council on April 21 at the Hilton Lisle/Naperville hotel. The event raised $50,000 for the organization.
