Guest readers share stories with Clarendon Hills students

CLARENDON HILLS — Some local visitors helped to make Monday Guest Reader Day at Walker School.
“Every class had a guest reader visit and read,” Walker Principal Christine Cagney said. “The guest readers are people from our school district and community. I think reading to children is one of the best things we can do.”
Cagney said the idea of the guest readers was to give students a chance to hear from some people in the community while at the same time “seeing some of them in a different way.”
The guests read to all students throughout the day from the book Have You Filled a Bucket Today? The book was selected by a committee to go along with the theme for Hinsdale-Clarendon Hills Elementary District 181’s Jan. 23-27 Social Emotional Learning for Academic Success Week.
“We are talking this year about the special person we are on the outside and what makes us special on the inside, such as being kind and funny,” Cagney said.
The guest readers for Monday’s program included Clarendon Hills Police Chief Ted Jenkins, Dave Godek, fire prevention officer from the village’s Fire Department; Walker School nurse June Zogas and secretary Jan Martin, District 181 board members Mike Nelson and Marty Turek, and District 181 administrators Renee Schuster, Doug Eccarius, and Janet Stutz.
