Upcoming events

Monroe School District 181 will host the following events:

• Peace Day - Sept. 21 at 2 p.m. Peace Day is coordinated at Monroe by our MRC Director Maureen Miks to celebrate the International Day of Peace that was begun by NATO. All Monroe students make a peace pinwheel, decorated with peace symbols and good wishes. The pinwheels are displayed in the front of the school on Peace Day, some are sent to The O’Brien School for the Masaai in Tanzania, some will be sent to the American School in India, and some will be sent to a school In South Africa. Students make wishes for peace and symbolically send them off to the children of other countries with our pinwheels.

A giant dove that is presented to the group at the assembly, and students parade around the building singing several peace songs. Monroe families were asked to take a pinwheel on their travels or business trips and then track the pinwheels on Google Earth. So far they are in every continent except Antarctica, according to Maureen Miks.

• Monroe Community Partners - Sept. 26 and ongoing. Community Partners have teamed up with the Monroe School PTO in an effort to give back to the students. The second Wednesday of each month will feature local restaurants that have agreed to give back a portion of their sales to the school. The fourth Wednesday of each month will feature other organizations who have offered to give back to Monroe.

This month, Monroe is partnering with TCBY (6300 Kingery Hwy. Willowbrook) and at Standard Market (333 East Ogden, Westmont) on Sept. 26.
