Final National Merit Scholars are named

More than 1,700 additional winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by colleges and universities have been announced by National Merit Scholarship
Corporation. This final announcement of winners in the 2011 competition were selected by officials of sponsoring colleges from among finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program who will attend their institution. College-sponsored awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.
Following are area winners, their hometown, probable career field, high school attended and the name of the sponsoring college of university.

Alexandra A. Holder, La Grange, journalism, Lyons Township, University of Iowa.
Andrew J. R. Nelson, LaGrange Park, writing, Lyons Township, Carleton College.
Elizabeth J. Myhre, Western Springs, education/music, Lyons Township, Lawrence University.
Usman Akhter, Westmont, medicine, Hinsdale Central, University of Chicago.
