Two people were killed early Thursday when the Jeep they were in struck a tree, rolled over and caught fire in Westmont.

Officers responded at 3:20 a.m. to a single-vehicle crash at 534 W. 59th St., Westmont police said. The Jeep Grand Cherokee was engulfed in flames when officers arrived, a release from police said. The fire was extinguished by the Westmont Fire Department, but the two occupants were dead at the scene.

Police said the Grand Cherokee was traveling east on 59th Street when it left the roadway, struck a tree, rolled over, then caught fire.

Because of the police investigation, 59th Street was closed between Williams Street and Fairview Avenue, but has since reopened, police said about 10:30 a.m.

The victims were identified as Ricahrd Klima, 60, who was the driver, and his passenger, 71-year-old Arlene Majkrzak, DuPage County Coroner Richard A. Jorgensen said. Both lived at the same address in the 1900 block of Holly Avenue in Darien, Jorgensen said. Autopsies are scheduled for Friday.

The crash remains under investigation by Westmont police, the DuPage County Coroner’s office and the Felony Investigation Assistance Team’s Major Crash Reconstruction Team.
