More than 250 people showed up Oct. 9 to support the new Soaring Eagle Academy, a highly-individualized school for children on the autism spectrum, located in Burr Ridge.
The Let the Eagle Soar Gala at the Marriott Southwest in Burr Ridge brought together parents, teachers and supporters of the school which opened in September 2010. The primary/intermediate program has grown from five students to 20 and the high school just opened this fall with five students.
Following cocktails and dinner, attendees played a game of Heads or Tails to win the Split the Pot Raffle.
A live auction included items such as a trip to New York City with a tour of the Guggenheim Museum and a chance to ring the bell at the New York Stock Exchange; a sports package with tickets to Blackhawks, Cubs, White Sox and Bulls games; and a wine package including a wine tasting for 20, a wine fridge and 16 bottles of wine.
There was also a moving video about the mission and the students of Soaring Eagle followed by a Fund the Cause run by the directors where they collected pledges based on their current needs.
The Blue Van Band played blues and jazz during cocktails and the silent auction shopping.
The event raised $60,000 for the school, almost triple last year’s proceeds.
Soaring Eagle Academy is a nonprofit school, approved by the state of Illinois. It is the first school in the Midwest to follow the principles of the DIR®/Floortime, a learning model pioneered by Dr. Stanley Greenspan, M.D., and Dr. Serena Wieder, Ph.D.
