Fitness

Sign up now for Park District of La Grange fitness classes for adults, seniors and kids. Classes include Zumba, Spin, Drums Alive!, Kickboxing, Yoga and Bootcamp. There are also several new fitness classes this season including: Total Body Dance, Yoga Core, Zumba Gold for those 50 years and older, plus new children’s fitness classes such as Hula Hoopin and Zumbatonic. ACT II, an Adventist Midwest Health program for adults 50 and older, offers exercise, social and health-care topics to the community. There are no dues. Fitness Programs: Each ACT II participant works at his/her own level. If the participant has never exercised or is returning, this is the place to start. Many new ACT II friendships have developed from these regimens and the camaraderie of the aerobic and Tai Chi exercise or the walking programs.

Fitness Fun: Strength-Cardio (Aerobics)-Stretch Combo. Time to Thrive: Moving Forward After Cancer will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursdays, Feb. 23 - March 29. Registration Required. Both educational and experiential, this six week series is for cancer survivors who have completed treatment. Each two-hour session begins with physical group exercise that is facilitated by a trained exercise specialist and tailored to each individuals’ needs. Weekly nutrition classes, survivorship care plans, group support, and discussion that focuses on the emotional aspects of survivorship, will be part of the experience. A light dinner is provided at each session and participants are given pedometers to help track physical activity. Attendance each week is encouraged for the full benefit of the program.

The DuPage County Health Department wants to remind residents that using an RxBOX to drop off unused medications is a safe and easy way to contribute to a better environment. The Health Department has partnered with 12 municipal and county law enforcement agencies in placing RxBOX collection boxes in police stations throughout the county. The materials are collected periodically from the RxBOX locations and safely incinerated by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency using state-of-the-art technology. Residents who are clearing out their medicine cabinets can dispose of their old medications at any of the following RxBOX locations: Burr Ridge Police Department, 7660 S. County Line Road No. 1, Burr Ridge and DuPage County Sheriff, 501 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton.

Healthy Steps

Fleet Feet Sports Elmhurst is partnering with Hinsdale Parks and Recreation and RML Specialty Hospital on a new collaborative venture, Healthy Parks, Healthy Patients 5K taking place on Earth Day, April 22. Fleet Feet will provide coaching and training to prepare runners and walkers for this special race with a 10-week training program. Training begins Feb. 16 with group training hosted on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. at the store, 124 Schiller St., Elmhurst and Sundays at 8 a.m. at Katherine Legge Memorial Park, in Hinsdale. Customized training packages, complete with weekly e-mail updates, tips, and training schedules, will benefit runners and walkers of all levels. The Aging Well Community Action Teams of La Grange and LaGrange Park hold a monthly Walk for Health 10:30 a.m.-noon the third Wednesday of the month indoors at Park District of La Grange’s Recreational Center, 536 East Ave. The Walk for Health encourages people to exercise, especially by walking, to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Illinois residents now have access to a free prescription assistance program. The Illinois Rx Card, which is free to all Illinois residents, provides discounts on medications with an average savings of around 30 percent. There are no restrictions to membership, no income requirements, no age limit and no applications to fill out. The DuPage Community Clinic and the DuPage County Health Department have opened the Southeast DuPage Health Initiative, whose mission is to connect low-income residents to a full range of health services. The Initiative is located at 422 N. Cass Ave., Westmont. The initiative will provide critical health services to about 1,000 people this year and hopes to increase that number to 4,000 in three years.

Free Hearing Screenings (by appointment only) will be offered to ACT II members from 8 a.m.-noon Feb. 21, at Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital Outpatient Department, 5101 S. Willow Springs Road, La Grange. Call (630) 856-7525, for appointment.

The DuPage County Health Department is encouraging individuals who are at a high risk for contracting HIV/AIDS to get tested and seek subsequent care and treatment if necessary. Through grants made available from the Illinois Public Health Association and the Illinois Department of Public Health, the Health Department offers free testing to those persons most at risk for HIV/AIDS, including intravenous drug users, high-risk heterosexuals and homosexual men. Individuals who do not meet the criteria to receive free testing can still be tested for a $50 fee at the Health Department’s STD Clinic, which also offers testing for other sexually transmitted diseases. Sexually transmitted diseases screenings, provided 2-7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, will include short, educational programs, followed by an opportunity for parents and students to socialize. Support

Aging Care Connections, La Grange, will offer two dementia care classes beginning in March. The first is a five-session class for caregivers of individuals with late stage Alzheimer’s disease or other related dementias. Topics may include: understanding late stage dementia, communication with individuals with late stage dementia, understanding the levels of medical care, anticipatory grief and loss, end of life options, stress relief and self-care, legal and financial issues, and community resources. The second program in the Aging Care Connections, La Grange, series of dementia care classes beginning in March, is the Early Stage Memory Loss Support Group. This eight-week program is designed for individuals diagnosed with early stage Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia, and their family members or friends. Group sessions will offer participants the opportunity to explore what memory loss means to them, learn ways to cope with changes, maximize strength, enhance communication, and plan for the future. Participants will meet in two groups with those experiencing memory loss in one group and family members or friends in the other group. Enrollment is required. Ray Graham Association’s Bednorz Children’s Respite Home provides local families temporary relief from the responsibilities of caring for individuals with chronic physical or mental disabilities. The Bednorz Home is a five-bedroom, wheelchair accessible, residential home located in Lombard. The maximum capacity of this home is five children at a time.
