Family Friendly: Kids can enjoy one last bash before school

There’s time for one last celebration before summer vacation ends. That’s why the Oakbrook Terrace Park District is having a Back to School Bash, noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25 at Heritage Park, 1S 325 Ardmore Ave.
“It’s going to be a little party in the park,” Recreation Supervisor Hannah Boehm said. “We have a DJ coming out. We’re going to do some back-to-school crafts. There’s going to be games and prizes and we’re also going to raffle off two back-to-school packages that will include a backpack and school supplies.” A snack will be served at this free event which is open to all ages.
“Just show up and enjoy,” Boehm said. “It’s a chance to get everyone out in the park while it’s still nice and celebrate a new school year and all the exciting things that go along with that.”

Kids blue?
If the end of summer is making your kids sad, some really blue creatures may cheer them. The Park District of La Grange will show “The Smurfs” as their Back to School Movie in the Park, 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 at Sedgwick Park, 48th Street and 10th Avenue. As an added treat, there will be free popcorn.

Magic at the market
You can stock up on fresh fruit, vegetables and baked goods while your kids are mesmerized by Magical Matt Scherer, 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29 at the Yorktown Evening Farmers Market at the Shops on Butterfield, Butterfield Road and Highland Avenue, Lombard. Aspirations Dance Company entertains at the Sept. 5 Farmers Market.

A good start
Children going to school for the first time will be particularly interested in hearing, “It’s My First Day of Kindergarten!” by Hyewon Yum, 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29 at the Oak Brook Barnes & Noble, 297 Oakbrook Center. They will also hear Judy Schachner’s “Skippyjon Jones: Class Action,” and do a themed activity.

Invasion ending
Time is running out on Xtreme BUGS, the exhibit of gigantic animatronic bugs at Brookfield Zoo, First Avenue between Ogden Avenue and 31st Street. You have only until Sept. 7 to see the exhibit, which also includes live insects. Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for children and seniors plus regular zoo admission.
