HINSDALE — The list of services that Jane’s Blue Iris offers is almost as long as the variety of flowers sold in the Hinsdale florist shop.
Blue Iris does outdoor planting, holiday decorating, seasonal displays and wedding flowers, working with designers, corporate accounts and the person who strolls in off the street for a bouquet.
Jane Gavran has owned Blue Iris for almost 30 years, having bought her partner out about 10 years ago.
Her parents were horticulturists and owned a greenhouse in Juneau, Wis., a small town between Madison and Fond du Lac.
“I grew up in a flower shop,” said Gavran, who lives in Clarendon Hills. “The love of the business gets in your system.”
Jane’s Blue Iris gets fresh flowers from local distributors, who get their stock from Hawaii, Columbia, Ecuador, Australia and New Zealand. The shop also gets direct shipments from California and Holland.
Gavran said the delphinium and mini-calla lilies in the cooler are from Holland, and they also get dahlias, lady’s mantel, hydrangea, and freesia.
Some customers have a standing weekly order for fresh flowers, whatever kind looks best.
The shop also sells and delivers large urns to place outside a home or business’ front door or out on the patio. The store then arranges the plants and flowers in the urn and changes them with the seasons.
Don’t ask Gavran what her favorite flower is.
“I could never decide. I just love them all,” Gavran said.
Not everyone wants fresh cut flowers, however. Gavran estimates a little less than half her sales are for silk flowers.
“We work with a lot of interior designers on home décor,” she said.
Silk flowers and artificial trees had fallen out of fashion, but they are regaining their popularity, Gavran said.
“This time of year, people are looking for fall wreaths and swags,” said Debbie Jeros, who works in the Blue Iris.
“We have fall stuff coming in daily now,” Gavran said. “We just need time to put it up. We will definitely have fall in here next week.”
She already is busy ordering merchandise for the winter holidays.
For people who want the festive atmosphere, but don’t enjoy decorating, Blue Iris sells Christmas trees, which employees deliver, set up and decorate. They’ll deck your halls, too, with boughs of holly or whatever else the customer fancies.
“We’ll even come out and take it all down after the holidays,” Gavran said.
